YOGA TIPS FOR BEGINNERS
– HOW TO START PHYSICAL YOGA PRACTICE
1. Don’t start with Power, Dynamic or any other advanced yoga class! They might sound cool and maybe your friends who practice yoga regularly recommended those, but believe me, throwing yourself in at the deep end might put you off your practice.
2. Sign up for a beginner’s course, or start with beginner’s yoga class. These classes/courses are especially designed for complete beginners. This will allow you to build all the foundation you need to move onto all levels or more advanced lessons.
3. Private Yoga Classes. I can’t recommend taking few private yoga classes at the beginning of your yoga journey enough. You will have all the teacher attention during 1-1 lessons. You can also pause the class and ask any questions you might have. With one to one classes you will build all the foundations, learn the correct (and safe!) alignment and feel confident taking each pose! It’s your time, your money; it’s all about you and your needs. My clients all agree that during one private class you learn as much as if you would take 10 public classes. If you would like to find out more check out my post “Benefits of Private Yoga Classes”.
4. Find a teacher you resonate with. If you tried beginner’s yoga and you didn’t like it, you might start to think that yoga is not for you. There’s a high chance that it’s the teacher you didn’t like, not the practice! Try out different teachers. I strongly believe that yoga is for everyone, but not everyone has found the right teacher for them. Keep on looking for the teacher that brings out the best in you and helps you feel good!
5. Just keep practicing. It’s hard to be a beginner at anything really… yoga, dancing, singing, cooking, running… You only get better when you keep repeating the same action many times. Commit to as little as one class a week and you will definitely see improvements.
6. Allow yourself to feel frustrated, it’s normal! You are a beginner after all. Allow yourself to learn from mistakes, one day your body will remember all the Warrior 2 cues and key alignment points.
7. Don’t put pressure on yourself. Less is more. You don’t have to practice every day to see results. You will feel great and see progress from as little as once a week practice.
